How Your Spine and Joints Become Unstable

The main causes of instability to your spine and joints are mechanical, chemical, and mental/emotional. Mechanical causes are referred to as micro or macro trauma. Micro trauma can also be called repetitive stress injury.

If you sit all day at a desk typing with poor posture you can create problems like carpal tunnel, neck pain, upper back, or low back pain. There are simple solutions that will help you become healthier as you perform your normal work or acts of daily living.

Macro trauma refers to pain due to trauma to the body, such as a fall, a break, or a car crash. Both forms of mechanical causes of joint dysfunction benefit immensely from chiropractic care. Another cause of joint dysfunction is due to the chemical effects on the joint function and the body as a whole. Smoking, heavy drinking, and poor diet create chemical imbalances in the body.

If you give up smoking, you will increase your overall health immediately by double.

Your body is held erect by a precise law of opposition. If a muscle or ligament is injured and cannot come up to proper strength, its opposite muscle or ligament must go into spasm. The more injured a muscle or ligament, the more profoundly its opposite must stay in spasm. The spasmmed muscles and ligaments keep pulling your vertebrae and other joints out of alignment. A chiropractor can realign them, but they will keep going out of alignment.

The only way unstable vertebrae or joints can become stable is if the sprained or otherwise injured muscles and ligaments are rubbed out. If the instability has been there for a long time or is severe, the patient must begin performing core strengthening spinal corrective exercises. This is the only protocol that has proven (in a large number of research studies) to resolve chronic neck and low back pain.

Dr. Mayfield believes that developing a habit of better posture, gait and lifting is essential if there has been damage to your spine. As you change these simple habits your body immediately begins to heal.

The only constant in your body, or the universe is change. Every moment you are either getting better or you are getting worse. Nothing stays the same. Your habits absolutely determine the outcome. Time is your score keeper.

Your physical body is your foundation. To make it healthy and happy you must have good posture, breathe out forcefully from your lower abdomen and eat correctly. As your physical body becomes more stable, it provides a stable foundation for your mind.

Dr. Mayfield will help you to improve your posture and gait. He will teach you how to lift correctly and the best way to walk up and down hills and stairs. He will prescribe simple exercises that help you to restore your muscle balance and your mobility. As you restore the alignment of your spine and the way you use it with posture and gait, you also restore the integrity of your nervous system. You have more strength, more flexibility. If you do not try to use up every bit of your new found strength and power, your pain levels will subside quickly, so you can get back to feeling good.
