The first visit forms you download are a very important connection between Dr. Mayfield and you. The more completely you fill out the forms, the more comprehensively he can evaluate both your health issues and the efforts it will take to resolve them. Dr. Mayfield utilizes the "Five Elements" (Chinese physiology, the basis of acupuncture) as well as Western physiology to understand how your body is functioning. His approach to healing has evolved into an understanding that the mind, body and spirit are completely interdependent, and are either supporting each other or creating problems for each other. After reviewing your intake forms and asking you what you expect from this office, Dr. Mayfield will perform a standing and sitting postural examination of your spine and extremities with you in correct posture. This examination will give him a clear understanding of the traumas your muscles and ligaments have sustained. By having you stand and sit in correct posture, you can not hide any of your injuries from him. Then He sketches your spine in his worksheet (compared to a perfect spine) so he can accurately determine how much misalignment and stress your spine is currently dealing with. The sketch of your spinal column gives him the type of information he would discover in a series of x-rays of your spine. His sketch includes an evaluation of spasmed muscles that are having to work too hard, and the flaccid muscle and ligaments, which are usually sprained or injured. This information provides Dr. Mayfield with a comprehensive understanding of your spinal column. Since each organ has a group of muscles that make the electrical energy the organ system needs, Dr. Mayfield gets a glimpse of the stress your organ system is handling. Sometimes the organ is being asked to perform more than it is capable of performing. The organ may overheat. The meridians that oversee the organ may be running too much or too little energy. All of this is discernable. During the first visit, and subsequent visits, Dr. Mayfield rubs out the origin and insertion of injured or traumatized muscles and ligaments and realigns your spine using a combination of gentle methods. He has found (and research has confirmed) that rubbing out soft tissue injuries and traumas allows your spine to come back into normal alignment patterns. There is a large volume of research dealing with chronic neck and low back pain, which confirms that most chiropractors, orthopedists, medical doctors and physical therapists are not getting the job done. They can resolve "this" episode, but the episodes keep reoccurring at shorter intervals and greater intensity. The only combination that is proven over time to restore chronic neck and low back problems back to their healthy state is: 1. Rubbing out the soft tissue trauma and injury 2. Realigning the spine and extremities 3. Giving the patient core strengthening, spinal corrective exercises 4. *I believe the list must include learning to have good posture and gait 5. Learning to breathe out forcefully from below your naval is just as necessary. Healing is a team effort. If you want to heal your body, you must become an essential member of your healing team. If you want to become healthier every year of your life, I am here to help you on this incredible odyssey. In health, John L. Mayfield, D.C.
