Sleep Issues: Common Causes and How to Fix Them Naturally

June 9, 2026, 8:06 AM
At John Mayfield Chiropractic in Grass Valley, CA, quality sleep is an essential part of overall health and wellness. Sleep allows the body and mind to recover, enhances immune function, helps regulate mood, and contributes to physical  healing. Unfortunately, many individuals struggle with falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling rested. Understanding common causes of sleep problems and natural approaches that may help can support better long-term health.

Common Causes of Sleep Problems

Sleep issues can develop for many reasons. Stress and anxiety are among the most common contributors, as racing thoughts and tension can make it difficult to relax before bedtime. Physical discomfort, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, or muscle tension, may also interfere with the body’s ability to rest comfortably. Lifestyle habits can also play a role. Excessive caffeine intake, inconsistent sleep schedules, late-night screen use, and lack of physical activity often disrupt the body’s natural sleep cycle.
At our office, I find that a combination of rubbing out trauma and injury in muscles and ligaments, realigning the vertebra and extremities and doing cranial work releases so much of the tension that patients sleep much better.

Cranial Work

Cranial work was first begun by osteopaths to subtly remove blockages in the movements of cranial bones of the head. They were able to relieve many conditions in the cranial area.
Practitioners soon began realizing that all of our organs make those same movements. If an organ gets stuck and cannot move, all the muscles and soft-tissue in that area tense up. Our shoulders and hips also make those same types of subtle movements. When they cannot, the tension builds up and we have to toss and turn all night to get adequate circulation into those areas.
Cranial work is one of the very effective tools used that allows otherwise tense areas of the body to fully relax at night when every other part of our body is letting down for sleep.

Natural Ways to Support Better Sleep

Developing healthy sleep habits may improve sleep quality without relying solely on medications. Creating a consistent sleep routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps support the body’s internal clock.
Shutting off TV and other screens and either meditating or reading for the last hour before bedtime really helps. The blue light from screens depletes our melatonin, preventing us from naturally letting down at bedtime. A lot of people find that, anytime they stay up past a particular time each night, it’s just enough to throw off their natural sleep cycles. Then they get too tired to sleep. It becomes a vicious cycle. A comfortable sleep mask helps in summer when we may need to sleep before it gets dark. Regular physical activity can support better sleep as well, although intense exercise immediately before bedtime may not be ideal for some individuals.

The Connection Between Physical Health and Sleep

Physical discomfort and tension are a huge factors in getting restful sleep. This is why chiropractic is so helpful for patients getting a good night’s sleep. Addressing physical factors that affect comfort supports improved relaxation and better sleep quality over time. Looking at overall health rather than symptoms alone often provides a more complete approach to wellness.

Supporting Better Rest and Wellness

Sleep challenges can affect energy, concentration, mood, and daily function. Identifying contributing factors and creating healthier routines can make a meaningful difference in overall well-being.
